Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 2026

Overview

Edda is designed with privacy as a core principle. Your writing stays on your device. We do not collect, store, or have access to any content you create in Edda.

What We Collect

We collect minimal information necessary to operate the service:

  • Email address (for license delivery, account authentication, and support)
  • Name (optional, for purchase records)
  • Payment information (processed securely by Square, PayPal, or Venmo — we never see your card details)
  • Authentication tokens (when using Google Sign-In via Firebase Authentication)

What We Don't Collect

  • Your notes, documents, or any content created in Edda
  • Audio recordings or transcribed text from speech recognition
  • AI-generated content or prompts sent to local AI models
  • Usage analytics or telemetry
  • Location data
  • Device identifiers beyond what's needed for licensing

Microphone & Speech Recognition

Edda includes an optional speech-to-text dictation feature that requires microphone access. When you use this feature:

  • Audio is processed on your device using your operating system's built-in speech recognition engine
  • No audio data is recorded, stored, or transmitted to Volsung Technologies servers
  • Microphone access is only active while you are actively using the dictation feature
  • You can revoke microphone permission at any time through your device settings

On Android, this feature uses the device's native speech recognition service. Depending on your device manufacturer and settings, speech processing may be handled on-device or by your device's default speech recognition provider (e.g., Google). Please refer to your device manufacturer's privacy policy for details on how speech data is processed by the operating system.

Local AI Features

Edda offers optional AI-powered writing assistance through Ollama, a local AI engine that runs entirely on your device:

  • All AI processing happens locally on your computer — no data is sent to external AI services
  • Your writing prompts, generated text, and AI interactions never leave your device
  • AI models are downloaded once and run offline
  • Volsung Technologies has no access to your AI interactions

Authentication

Edda uses Firebase Authentication (provided by Google) to manage user accounts. When you sign in with Google, Firebase receives your basic profile information (name and email address) to authenticate your identity. We use this solely for account management and license validation. Please refer to Firebase's privacy documentation for details on how Firebase handles authentication data.

Data Storage

All your writing is stored locally on your device. If you use the optional sync feature, your data is encrypted end-to-end before leaving your device. We cannot read your synced content.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

  • Square, PayPal, and Venmo — payment processing
  • Firebase Authentication (Google) — account sign-in
  • Ollama — local AI engine (runs on your device, no data transmitted)

Children's Privacy

Edda is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us so we can promptly delete it.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of Edda after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
